Charles Dickens Esquire embarked on a steam packet out of Liverpool in
January 1842, beginning an extended tour of parts of Canada and the
United States. His adventures and commentary about his travels,
the people he met and the politics of the time were serialized and later
published as "American Notes". Reading of his experiences on the "passage out" puts our present day travel into clear perspective. His 'state room' with berths "than which nothing smaller for sleeping in was ever made except coffins" may sound familiar; the three or for days of 'heavy seas' and headwinds that rendered all the passengers and many crew helpless and the temporary landfall on a shoal before eventually reaching Boston Harbour some eighteen days later, would be more hardship than most of our pampered population could tolerate. Ask Mr. Dickens if he would like to do the same trip in under six hours and he'd gaze at you in astonishment as the likely trip from London to Liverpool would have taken longer .than that ... although its almost guaranteed that the steam train from London would have left exactly on time. Oh for the 'good old days'! |
leading
travel services of our time are evolving as rapidly as the world wide
web. For arranging flights, hotels, rental cars and more there are
services such as Expedia and
Travelocity which allow some flexibilty in
booking departure times or changing tickets* and the
cost-cutting discount agencies such as Hotwire.com and Priceline.com
where for rock-bottom prices you give up the 'right' to choose an
airline and / or your flight departure times.
Expedia has been
in the travel business longer than most and has some highly integrated
services for booking multiple flights, accommodations and other travel
necessities. We are happy to provide the most popular
do-it-yourself booking forms on-line right here on Decklin's
Domain. We recommend you bookmark us so you can use this page as a
starting point to shop around for the flights you need. |
|
| *You must be very careful when ordering 'on-line' from any travel company. Always check the 'fine print' as your rights to change tickets, flights etc are often severely curtailed for any type of incentive discount. | ||
