While the East Bay has had numerous little earthquakes unsettling everyone the past day or two, here in the North we've been busy working on the site. Some of you may know that we've been setting up a webhosting service and the new home page for Decklin's Domain Webhosting is at
http://decklinsdomain.net/index.htm .
In other news, Noëlle Hampton tells us that her new CD is now available at select Borders Book Stores in Northern California - congratulations are due there !!
Finally, if you have the time, please click through to our music page and click on the 'Vote for Decklin's
Domain in MusicSearch's Site of the Day Contest' link! We keep getting beaten by this South Shore Records bunch and it would be nice to get the front page publicity that could result from a win ;)

Well last night saw the first storm o' the season blast its way through the Bay Area, randomly toppling many trees over power lines and the occasional unfortunate house or car. For those of you who wondered where the Demise Master Server went - we lost power for 8 or so hours.
Of course the Demise demo and Mordor 2 servers were also down. Sorry 'bout that.
Luckily, the Rolling Stones Concert (tonight) has not been affected :)

This should have appeared last year I guess, but somehow I missed the
issue. What would you think if you saw the headline ~
"Microsoft's Smart Tags Threaten the Web" ?
The deal appears to be that users of Windows™ XP™ could be surfing the web
and reading the web page that you have spent hours designing with links to your
favorite travel agency and without you or your readers knowledge, active links
are added to your page on appropriate (or inappropriate) keywords.
Those links in some cases will take the reader to competing services of
Microsoft's choice !!! In many cases due to the prevalence of
pay-per-click search engine services this means in effect the original author of
the page has 'paid' for the opportunity for MS to steal the traffic!
I wouldn't mind hearing your thoughts on this after you've read
the article above, or if you know something more about the subject please feel
free to email decklin@pacbell.net
.

Here's something a little different ... a new search engine that saves you
the time in entering your search term in several major search engines by setting
it up automatically .... except I just tried it and it doesn't quite work right
- yet ;) I'll contact them tomorrow and see if we can't fix it !!

Received by email today, author unknown ...
Lord of the Operating System
Recently one of my friends, a computer wizard, paid me a visit.
As we were
talking I mentioned that I had recently installed Windows XP on my PC. I
told him how happy I was with this operating system and showed him the
Windows XP CD. To my surprise he threw it into my microwave oven and turned it
on.
Instantly I got very upset, because the CD had become precious to me, but
he said: 'Do not worry, it is unharmed.'
After a few minutes he took the CD out, gave it to me and said: 'Take a
close look at it.'
To my surprise the CD was quite cold to hold and it seemed to be heavier
than before. At first I could not see anything, but on the inner edge of
the central hole I saw an inscription, an inscription finer than anything I had
ever seen before. The inscription shone piercingly bright, and yet remote,
as if out of a great depth:
12413AEB2ED4FA5E6F7D78E78BEDE820945092OF923A40EElOE5IOCC98D444AA08E324
'I cannot understand the fiery letters,' I said in a timid voice.
'No but I can,' he said. 'The letters are Hex, of an ancient mode, but the
language is that of Microsoft, which I shall not utter here. But in common
English this is what it says:
One OS to rule them all,
One OS to find them,
One OS to bring them all and in the darkness bind them.
It is only two lines from a verse long known in System lore:
"Three OS's from corporate kings in their towers of glass,
Seven from valley lords where orchards used to grow,
Nine from dotcoms doomed to die,
One from the Dark Lord Gates on his dark throne
In the Land of Redmond where the Shadows lie.
One OS to rule them all, one OS to find them,
One OS to bring them all and in the darkness bind them,
In the Land of Redmond where the Shadows lie."

Seems like I blinked and a couple of weeks went by! Working on
re-arranging the parlour starting with the articles and
essays section, so there's now an index
page which will list items as I link them in, when I'm comfortable with the look
and feel of that, the poetry section will be expanded in a similar
fashion. I think the Ken Evoy article
is worthy of a second mention, and I decided that I will include some of the
more noteworthy commercial articles BUT they will be listed seperately.
Meant to mention I got myself a present of a map of Middle-Earth (fairly scarce
print from about 1971) and also received some nice high-res jpeg files of
similar prints which I will add shortly. Thanks to Gary Fairfax for
those!! Lord of the Rings Rules!!!
